The Pelican Natural Science and Technology Learner’s Book, Intermediate Phase, comprises three textbook from Grades 4 to 6. All the three books have been written in compliances with the syllabus prescribed by the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) and the National Curriculum Statement (NCS), South Africa. The approach of these books is a title different with adequate text and attractive layout to create a special appeal for the children of the age group of the respective classes. SALIENT FEATURES OF THE BOOK All the concepts as given in the CAPS have been covered and are presented in easy language with attractive illustrations. The content has been created giving special consideration to South African learners. • Well-structured chapters: Every chapter is presented in a proper format, starting with an introduction to the chapter and main content, which is divided into headings, subheadings and intext activities that break the monotony and to reinforce the concepts being taught. Content that enhances the importance of the concept has been given in coloured boxes. • Sci-Info: This feature not only gives extra information about the concepts, but also tells a learner how science and technology is related to our daily lives. • Spread pages: In the chapters, colourful spread pages are given to make learning interesting and consist of main concepts in the chapter that are presented through well-defined text and pictures/illustrations/images. Pictures have been inserted to explain concepts. • Informal assessments: Some simple exercises or probing questions have been given in the main content to develop thinking skills. • Real-life skills: The content in this section help make the learner understand the role of science in our lives through moral/scientific values and scientific skills. • Assessment part: It is an important learning tool that prepares the learner for international level science exams. (a) Ample numbers of questions are given from lower-order thinking skills to higher-order thinking skills. (b) Exercises such as MCQs and 'Questions based on application of knowledge' inculcate logical and reasoning thinking skills in the learner. (c) Investigating activities are given at the end in the 'Investigation' section to create interest in the concept by inculcating visual and spatial intelligence in the learner.
