Facilitating language learning in the Foundation Phase is a comprehensive resource covering the teaching of English Home Language (HL) and English First Additional Language (FAL) learners in the Foundation Phase. Additional pre-listening and pre-reading activities support FAL learners while HL learners have more advanced texts and tasks. Phonemic charts in Sesotho, Afrikaans, isiZulu, isiXhosa and Setswana are included so that the student-teacher may adapt the lessons according to the language of learning and teaching employed in the classroom. The book provides teachers with many opportunities to design activities and lesson plans aimed at introducing, developing, and assessing skills. The interactive approach helps develop understanding, insight, and competence by including explanations of why activities are included, and what skills are being covered in each activity. The book is aligned with the requirements of the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS) on teaching literacy in the Foundation Phase. Facilitating language learning in the Foundation Phase is suitable for BEd, PGCE and ACE/ADE students taking courses in Literacy in the Foundation Phase, and is also of interest to in-service Foundation Phase teachers. The book features: • Student assignments which provide student-teachers with opportunities to put theory into practice and develop their teaching aids for use in the classroom • A strong focus on physical activities such as role playing and drama techniques to encourage active language learning • Phonics posters and handwriting worksheets for teachers to print for use in the classroom • An audio CD with phonic sounds, rhymes, songs and stories to help teachers make learning English fun. A teaching plan, including links to useful OERs, is available to prescribing lecturers on the Learning Zone. The posters are available to students for download in A4 format, as well as the phonemic charts.
